This slide show about the state quarters is very funny. I particularly enjoyed what they have to say about the horrible outline coins and the St. Louis Arch. I'm sure Minnesota will have a loon. Snore.

As it turns out, the states don't deserve all the blame for the design of quarters, no matter how ghastly.

washingtonpost.com will start charging to read the whole thing in a few days, so I've extracted a quote below.
________
As Jackson and other artists across the country have discovered, the U.S. Mint is under no obligation to use, or even honor the artistic integrity of, such submissions. Under the provisions of the 50 State Quarters program, the Mint asks state governors to drum up ideas in the forum or contest of their choosing. But in the end, government engravers alter and recompose the concepts pretty much as they please. And they put their own initials on the completed work.

"The Mint is a sovereign entity," Jackson says. "They answer to no one."
