Believe it or not, I've had occasion to listen to a lot of information about boxing over the last few years. I haven't emerged as one of those anti-boxing people, but if you want to know why boxing is still regulated, check out this story. Posted by Alison-Jane at August 12, 2003 07:10 AMComments
I am a boxing fan. Most boxing fans acknowledge that the sport would be better if it was more controlled/regulated. It's a sport whose participants are almost always from very poor backgrounds and have a tendency to squander any money they do make. Look at Tyson filing bankruptcy, for instance. The problem is that people have a right to make a living. Boxing didn't kill this guy, despite what the article says. He died of a heart attack - which could have happened with any exertion. People "drop dead" at work all the time. This guys'job just involved a boxing ring. More egregious circumstances, like some one being beaten to death (like what happened at the toughman contest in Florida) or a guy cutting weight too dramatically to make a fight, are more preventable tragedies.
